by C. Gamble (Author)

This story is a sequel, of a sort, written after The Whistle Always Blew At Noon. "The" Game is predicated on the recollections of an old man who pines over the passing of his adolescence. As a teen, he was bounced around from town to town and school to school. Taking place in a small southern Wisconsin town, the author expresses his appreciation for his mentors, friends, and classmates. What the story lacks in the way of high drama, is made up for with the stories within the story that are intended to prod the nostalgic minds and souls of the reader. Why "The" Game? Every small town or village across this great land has its "moment in the sun"-something to remember, something to be proud of. Something for grandmas and grandpas to pass along to their grandchildren. "The" Game is exactly that. The referenced athletic contest had the residents of Edgerton on the edge of their seats until the victory laurel was brought home.

But the story runs deeper than a two-hour basketball game. The most poignant theme is about the added value of people who forge relationships, some that go back 60 years or more.
